Liberty Seated Dollars (1840 - 1873)
Struck from 1840 to 1873 the Liberty Seated Dollar was designed by chief engraver Christian Gorbrecht and was the last $1 silver coin made before the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873. Containing 90% silver and 10% copper the coin was originally minted in Philadelphia but went on to be produced in both the San Fransisco and New Orleans mints as well. The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty in a seated position surrounded by 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies of the United States. The reverse features a left facing bald eagle clutching olive branches in one foot and an olive branch in the other.
