American Gold Buffalo
The American Gold Buffalo is the official 24 karat US gold bullion coin: one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold with a $50 face value.

The American Gold Buffalo is the 24 karat gold bullion coin of the United States, containing one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and carrying a $50 face value. It was the first pure gold coin issued by the US Mint.
The design is adapted from the classic Buffalo motif, with a Native American portrait on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse. The bullion coin is issued in the one-ounce size, and the Mint has also produced proof versions in Mint packaging for collectors.
The main practical difference from the American Gold Eagle is the alloy. The Buffalo is pure gold, so it is softer and marks more easily under handling, while the Gold Eagle's 22 karat alloy is more durable. Buyers who want a full ounce of pure gold in a US government coin choose the Buffalo; buyers who expect the coin to be handled often lean toward the Eagle.
At .9999 fine the Buffalo comfortably clears the IRS .995 gold minimum, so it is IRA-eligible when held with an approved depository.
