Gold IRAs and Retirement Accounts

Holding physical gold and silver as part of a long-term plan raises a different set of questions than buying a coin outright. Where will it be stored, whose name is it held in, and which coins are even permitted in the account you have in mind. This pillar covers those mechanics.

These pages are educational information only. They are not tax or legal advice. Texas Bullion Exchange does not provide tax or legal advice — talk to your own tax professional about your situation.

The main structure is the self-directed IRA that holds physical metals, commonly called a gold IRA. A guide to the basics explains the three parties involved — the custodian that administers the account, the dealer that supplies the metal, and the approved depository that holds it — and why the metal cannot be kept at home. It also covers the general routes for funding an account and the categories of fees to ask about before opening one.

Not every coin qualifies. The IRS sets minimum fineness levels for IRA-eligible metals, and separately excludes collectibles. That combination is why the .9999 fine American Gold Buffalo qualifies on purity, why the 22-karat American Gold Eagle qualifies through a specific statutory exception, and why pre-1933 US gold generally does not. The overview of IRA-approved coins works through the list.

The pages in this pillar describe general rules only. How any of them apply to your own account and circumstances is a question for your own tax professional, not for a dealer and not for a web page.

A retirement account is not the only structure people ask about here. The Principal Protection Program locks in the original value of a qualifying gold position, and it is handled by the same specialists, in the same kind of conversation.

The IRA side of the business is handled by specialists rather than through the online shop. Call 855-344-2646 to have someone walk you through how an account would be set up and what it would hold.
