In the annals of history, tales of lost treasures and fabled shipwrecks have always captivated the human imagination. For Texas Bullion Exchange, the story of the S.S. Central America, also known as the "Ship of Gold," holds a particular fascination. This tale is an incredible blend of maritime tragedy, lost fortune, historical intrigue, and, eventually, a saga of rediscovery that brought a significant part of America's Gold Rush period back to life.

Launched in 1852, the S.S. Central America was a 280-foot wooden-hulled steamship that sailed the high seas during the height of the California Gold Rush. Tasked with transporting freshly mined gold from the California coast to the New York banks, this ship played a crucial role in the economy of the booming young America. However, in September 1857, the ship met a disastrous end.

During a routine voyage, the S.S. Central America encountered a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas. Despite the crew's valiant efforts, the ship was overwhelmed by the storm and sank to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, carrying with her 425 souls and tons of gold. This tragic event caused such a shock to the American economy that it contributed to the Panic of 1857, a financial crisis that lasted for several years.

The lost gold of the S.S. Central America, amounting to nearly 21 tons of gold nuggets, dust, and freshly minted gold and silver coins, lay undisturbed more than a mile beneath the surface for over 130 years. It was considered one of the greatest treasures ever lost at sea, a tantalizing secret held by the ocean depths.

Then, in 1988, the shipwreck was discovered by the Columbus-America Discovery Group led by Tommy Thompson. They brought up a staggering trove of gold, including an estimated 7,500 gold coins and 532 gold ingots, a recovery that made headlines around the world.

These coins and ingots were not only immensely valuable in terms of bullion but also of exceptional historical significance. Among them were coins struck during the California Gold Rush from the San Francisco Mint, including a variety of $20 Double Eagles. These coins offered a direct, tangible link to a pivotal period in American history, making them invaluable to historians, numismatists, and bullion investors alike.

Texas Bullion Exchange, with its mission to provide a vast selection of valuable precious metals and exceptional customer service, recognizes the importance of the S.S. Central America's gold and silver coins.
